Record label Ghostly International and modern cult classic programmers [Adult Swim] have paired up for a compilation of new music and art. A genre-busting 19-song collection, stretching the entire Ghostly International galaxy, Ghostly Swim explores the Avant-Pop style that the Ann Arbor/New York City label has been been championing for the past 9 years. Ghostly Swim features artists like Matthew Dear, Dabrye, Tycho and Aeroc and features new signings like UK cult band The Chap and NYC producer Michna. The free collection also includes favorite friends of the label like School Of Seven Bells, and Detroit’s Deastro, Milosh (Plug Research), FLYamSAM (Warp’s Flying Lotus and SAMIYAM), and Dark Party (Mush). Along with the new music, BoyCatBird (Ghostly’s mascots) make their animated debut in the awesome “City Suckers” video by Daniel Garcia/Superfi.

With the year coming to an end relatively soon and so many 08ers still yet to arrive, it's hard to believe I've set my sights exclusively on 2009 already. But it's a lot less hard to believe that considering just exactly what Animal Collective has in store for us with Merriweather Post Pavilion.
These next few months will be tough (or at least until the thing leaks)... relying on live cuts and videos is a good way to pass the time but I don't want it to ruin the experience of the listening to the studio versions (I still think the live "Fireworks" circa 2006 is better than the album version). Thanks to Collected Animals user Pavey Bare, there's a new way to cool the anticipation.
Pavey recently uploaded three covers of songs from Merriweather to the CA forum, most likely rendered from the various live MP3s and videos floating around. He took on "Taste," "In The Flowers," and "Brother Sport"... and let me just say these covers are absurdly fantastic. I've never really heard an Animal Collective cover that I've liked so I certainly didn't expect to hear one (much less three) that I'd put on repeat for hours. Without feeding you any more hyperbole, you can judge for yourself:

As they travel the path to a new album, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are doing a Hansel and Gretel and leaving breadcrumbs for us to munch on the way. One of those crumbs comes in the form of Festival Thyme, a new EP. The band will release it in the U.S. via their own Richter Scale imprint of Justice Records on October 21 on vinyl and digitally, while Superball Music will handle the album's CD and digital release in the UK and Europe.
Festival Thyme contains all new songs, including a peek at an alternate mix of a tune called "Bells of Creation" that will appear on the band's So Divided follow-up, due in January. In addition to the EP's CD and digital releases, there will be a U.S.-only 10" vinyl picture disc that replaces the track "Inland Sea" with a cover of the Replacements' "Within Your Reach". The 10" is limited to an edition of 3000.

iguessimfloating presents: The cool people at Young Turks recently pressed about 500 or so copies of a split 12" b/w Foals and Holy Fuck, with Foals taking on HF's "Super Inuit" and HF doing Foals' "Balloons." The best news used to be that you could pick up one of these super-limited splits if you caught them on tour, but now it's that Young Turks tossed up the songs onto their site for free. And not just MP3, oh no, but mega-hi-fi AIFF files. If you don't care about hi-fi or just want a smaller bite-sized nibble, here are the MP3s and the covers' respective originals:

'Merriweather Post Pavilion' will be the eighth studio album by New York City based band Animal Collective, to be released in January 2009. The album name comes from the Baltimore venue of the same name. Merriweather Post Pavilion was announced in a cryptic update to Animal Collective's website on October 4th, which initially caused a great deal of confusion about the nature of the news. The website was subsequently updated on October 8th with a link to a second page which showed a video of the track listing. Prediction: 'Brother Sport (Live)' will make an amazing album-closer!

Everyone has and will continue to compare Passion Pit to MGMT (a comparison that initially dissuaded me from investigating PP further), but where MGMT combines what is essentially catchy, optimistic emo (face it) with an "artsy" and "progressive" mantra, Passion Pit brings the same infectious bells and whistles without all the pretense. No whining, no pandering to wayward and impressionable emotions... no overt passion (which in this case is a good thing). With Faust, Earth and Sunn O))) collaborators acting as engineers - not to mention drummer Emil Amos having recently become the new other half of Om - Grails' avant-metal leanings are evident as always. But Doomsdayer's Holiday finds their already-broad palette continually expanding with 70s European film noir and cosmic free jazz explorations complimenting the Middle Eastern psychedelic folk-metal the group is already known for. After a wildly prolific three-year streak that saw the band ceaselessly pushing forward, Grails have finally made an album that pushes back.

Ja ich bin einer der wenigen, die noch gerne in Plattenläden gehen um sich dort die freshen neuen Tunes anzuhören. Und ja ich bin einer der wenigen, der sein Geld noch regelmässig für Platten rausschmeisst. Leider lässt es die Zeit oft nicht zu sich die Platten beim Händler deines Vertrauens direkt im Laden zu kaufen, so bin ich auch einer der vielen, der sein Vinyl übers Internet bestellt. Und ja ich bin auch einer der vielen der oft zu faul ist, die Platten immerwieder umzudrehen und höre deswegen zu wenig über meine vernünftige Anlage, aber... ich arbeite dran und vergess es nicht. Hier nun die Rubrik 'Vinylism'. Gepostet werden ausgewählte 12"s und EPs die ich mir im Laufe des Jahres 2008 angeschafft habe. Zunächst wird hier nur gelistet. Nach und nach verfeinere ich die Listen mit sinnfreien Kommentaren und bewerte. Also beachtet die Updates und schaut hier immer mal wieder vorbei.
Unverzichtbar als Infopool ist Discogs. Unverzichtbar als Reviewquelle ist De:Bug von denen ich auch Reviews übernehmen werde. Wertungen sind von mir (1=nicht so toll bis 5=Hammer) Ich versuche einiges zu verlinken also auf die zart blaue Farbe achten.
Arto Mwambe - Ouverture Antenne (Brontosaurus 009-6)
bleed auf De:Bug schreibt: "Ich glaube, ich hab schon öfter erwähnt, das Arto Mwambe eine Klasse für sich ist. Ich verstehe auch nach wie vor nicht, warum nicht mehr Leute solche Musik machen. House kann doch auch viel mehr sein als deep, kann soviel Energie entwickeln, dass man hintenüberfällt. Sich in einem Track immer wieder neu erfinden, Soul haben, bis es nicht mehr geht und Basslines, die einem den Magen umkrempeln, dabei jedoch soviel Optimismus ausstrahlen, dass man gar nicht mehr weiss, wie man zu weniger jemals feiern konnte. Ach. Zwei Tracks, die in die Plattenkiste gehören und dort nicht wieder raus dürfen, bevor sie nicht vom vielen Spielen völlig ruiniert sind. Bjorn Torske - Kan Jeg Slippe? (Sextags Mania 011)
Beide Tracks dieser unscheinbaren EP sind so um eine Viertelstunde lang. Puh. Und auch ziemliche Explorer. Langsame Housebeats, flirrende Freejazzflöten, abenteuerliches Soundgewusel, kantige Perkussion und viel viel mehr, klar, schließlich ist da viel Zeit. Das hört einfach nicht auf. Will man aber auch gar nicht. Slomodiscofolk vom Feinsten. Auf der Rückseite im Remix der Rasselbande Houseband. Ob es das wirklich gibt? So einer Platte glaube ich aus Prinzip alles. Sensationelles Machwerk jedenfalls. (4/5)
Jens Zimmermann - #2 (Hi Freaks 013)
Puh, ist das eine darke Nummer. Alles konzentriert sich auf das fast halluzinierte Wummern des Subbasses und der Rest ist eigentlich nur noch nebensächliche Tapete für die Intensität der Reduktion. Sehr gut. Irgendwie. Auch wenn ich mir den Floor dafür fast kaum vorstellen kann, ist so ein Sound definitiv etwas mit dem man alles auf Null stellen kann. Die Rückseite bleibt in dem magisch dunklen, aber dennoch eisig unterkühlten Sound und macht die EP zu einem echten Konzeptalbum. (5/5)

Marcel Dettmann - Clime EP (MDR 004)
Marcel Dettmann gibt sich auf seiner neuen EP gewohnt spröde und trocken. Die Bassdrum drückt, die Hi-Hats sicheln und die perkussiven Sequenzen brechen in kantigen Kaskaden aus den Reverb-Wolken, in die die Tracks getaucht sind, oder verdichten sich in einem Wall Of Sound aus White Noise. MDR bleibt das Techno-Label für alle, die sich von allürenlosen Bassschiebern die Ohren lang ziehen lassen wollen. (5/5)
Move D - Quit Quittin' (Uzuri 002)
David Moufang ist nach wie vor einfach nicht aufzuhalten. Über diese Maxi auf Uzuri haben sich ja schon alle komplett überschlagen und in der Tat sind die Tracks mehr als fein. Move D verwebt wie kein anderer hysterischen Discohouse mit fast schon meditativen 303s und das in einer grossartigen Manier. Und sonst? Verhaltene Freistöße in Richtung Afterhour-House mit kleinen erschöpften Orgeln, große verschwitzte Funk-Bleep-Monster und ein Outro, dass das Intro für ein besserer Morgen sein könnte. Müsste. Sollte. (4/5)

Die Disco Seite rockt mit ziemlich klassischem Soundhack Disco Sound der die Oldschool zerschnippelt und dabei irgendwie dennoch alles wahrt und kickt wie ein galaktischer Maulesel auf Bluesüberdosis. Der Matthew Herbert Remix auf der b-Seite gefällt mir dann leider weniger und wird irgendwann anstrengen. Schade. (3/5)

• Album des Monats September: Mogwai - The Hawk And The Howling
Ganz knappe Entscheidung diesen Monat. Drei aussergewöhnliche Alben haben mich den zurückliegenden Monat geflasht. Auf Platz drei: E.S.T. - Leucocyte und das nicht wegen dem tragischen Tod von Esbjörn Svensson, sondern weil es einfach ein innovatives, überspultes, modernes Jazzalbum ist. Man höre sich nur 'Leucocyte: I. Ab Initio' an ein wahrer Genuss an Instrumentalisierung, Noise, Jazz und Vielseitigkeit. Auf Platz zwei und wirklich nur knapp am Album des Monats vorbeigeschrammt sind TV On The Radio mit Dear Science,. Besonders 'Dancing Shoes' und 'Family Tree' haben es mir sehr angetan. Was ich da immer an Referenzen heraushöre: Kate Bush, David Bowie, The Cure und sogar Red Hot Chili Peppers (obwohl ich die hasse), aber nur ab und an in minimalen Sequenzen, dann frage ich mich: Mensch du Halunke, das kennst du doch woher? Aber woher? Ein super Album zum entdecken, mitsingen oder einfach nur anhören und ausflippen. Mogwai hat dann doch den Vogel des Monats abgeschossen. Das Album in sich geschlossener als TVOTR und 'Batcat' ist grandios. Und lasst doch Mogwai machen wie sie wollen. Nicht alles und jeder muss/soll sich musikalisch verändern. Ich mags so wie es gekommen ist! In der Jahresendabrechnung sehen sich bestimmt alle drei Alben wieder. Mal schauen wer dann vor wem liegt ;)
