Live : Fleet Foxes - Live at Black Cat, Washington DC (2008)

04 English House
05 White Winter Hymnal
06 Your Protector

From the moment they took the stage at Washington, DC's Black Cat, Fleet Foxes seemed surprised by all the attention. Lead singer Robin Pecknold made several references to the size of the crowd, telling the sold-out audience he'd never seen so many people packed together. This brought a loud cheer from the roomful of fans who otherwise spent most of the night standing in slack-jawed awe over the band's breathtaking harmonies.
After a tentative start, Fleet Foxes seemed to find their collective voice, opening with "Sun Giant," the title track to the band's EP, released earlier this year on the Sub Pop label. They followed with highlights from their self-titled debut LP, including "White Winter Hymnal." Throughout the performance, the band played with a sort of bemused astonishment, repeatedly thanking the audience for their support.

• Audiolicious Part Nine 2009

Bill Callahan – Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
Bill macht folkige Indie Musik. Bill scheibt herrlich komische Texte ("Too Many Birds In One Tree"). Bill hat eine rauchige, tiefgründliche Stimme. Bill hat was zu sagen. Bill benutzt sogar Streicher. Smog! (7.5/10)

Depeche Mode – Sounds Of The Universe
„Music For The Masses“ war Depeche Mode’s letztes Album was ich gemocht habe. Die älteren Sachen sind ohne Frage Klassiker und dann und wann gerne gehört. Doch kann ich mit Depeche Mode leider so gar nichts mehr anfangen. Da lasse ich fundierte Reviews doch lieber Andere (Telegraph, Spin, Spiegel) schreiben. Bestimmt nicht schlecht aber toll? (5.5/10)

The Gentleman Losers – The Gentleman Losers
Boomkat schreibt: „Opening with the creased prologue of 'An Empire of Coins', The Gentleman Losers sound much as you wish Boards of Canada did - taking a water-bled guitar part then incrementally coating it in a queasy blend of crackling aural lint. Recorded at night in a reputedly haunted house that comprises part of Finland's medieval district, The Gentleman Losers describe their music as "one part 60s movie soundtracks, one part wooden electronica, all recorded through a 50s Telefunken mixer we found abandoned in a basement". 'The Gentleman Losers' encapsulate a universe of quiet musical aspirations in a breezy, effortless way that's all-too rare, managing to distil their sound into a pithy diktat : "we wanted to make music from a past that hasn't happened yet..."

Lawrence English – A Colour For Autumn
„Droplet“ Track One ist so ein geiles komisches Lied. Ambient Sounds aber diese Stimmenflächen, fantastisch! Auch sonst erinnert mich viel an Fennesz und somit ist das hier ein klasse Ambient Album. Lovely, very approachable micro-drones from 12k (7.5/10)

Pendle Coven – Self Assessment
Tolle 12“s haben Pendle Coven veröffentlicht auf Modern Love! Neben Andy Stott und Claro Intelecto DAS Aushängeschild bei Modern Love. Deep, technoid, rollend, grollend, minimal, düster. Schöne sphärische Technosounds mut dubbigen Elementen und immer furztrocken. Sehr clean, teilweise vertrackt. (7/10)

Tipp: 65daysofstatic

Focusing on instrumental post-rock with live and electronic percussion, 65daysofstatic is based in Sheffield, England. The band, whose name originates from an unreleased John Carpenter film, formed in 2001 as a trio (Joe Shrewsbury, Paul Wolinski, and Iain Armstrong). Armstrong left in May 2003 and by the end of the year Rob Jones (drums) and Gareth Hughes (bass) were added. The band released three albums: The Fall of Math (2004), One Time for All Time (2005), and The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007). As of spring 2007, the lineup included Shrewsbury (guitar), Wolinski (guitar, programming), Jones (drums), and Simon Wright (bass, programming). New release 2009 "Escape from New York"

• Video: Kevin Drew & Feist - The Water

"The Water" is not just a music video for the Feist song of the same name. It's a short film. You know, like "Thriller". Except with less zombie dancing.
The 15-minute short is directed by Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and stars Feist, Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, Batman Begins), and Canadian actor David Fox. Produced by Revolver Film Company, the nearly wordless piece plays out like a wintry fairy tale that's equal parts touching, mysterious, and unsettling.

Atom™ - Liedgut
The Wire Magazine 299, January 2009:
"In the publicity photos that accompany Liedgut, Uwe Schmidt, the man behind both the sculpted electronica of Atom TM and the cheesy exotica of Señor Coconut, stretches out in a chair at the Schumann Haus Zwickau, at a piano that used to belong to Clara Schumann. His hair is slicked, the moustache perfectly trimmed, and his clothing immaculately creased. The moods which it captures are multiple: European aristocratic sophistication, Weimar decadence, the stiff poise of Kraftwerk. The apparent inspiration for Liedgut was an exploration of Romanticism in the Germanic mode, from Schubert and Nietzsche to Kraftwerk. While both the presentation and the iridescent electronic sheen of the music suggest a gloss on this weighty historical heritage, the multi-layered nature of the project means this is superficiality which takes deep roots.
Liedgut is precise, pulsing but mostly beatless electronica, with none of the flirty Latin flippancy of Señor Coconut.
Although it shares a melodic purity and some vocodered spoken cadences with Kraftwerk, the dynamic is not Europe Endless motorik horizons, but the frozen-in-time classicism of the waltz. Concise, graceful melodic segments are duplicated across many of Liedgut´s 19 short tracks, with the album´s centrepiece three exquisite "12 Mittlere" compositions. The repertoire of Liedgut is intimately familiar but uncannily assimilated, as if Germanic classicism had been rendered as a endless fractal electronic composition.
Florian Schneider adds vocals on an elegiac epilogue to the album, and even some repeated sampled tics of mobile phone interference in the middle section can´t quite shatter the mirage of timelessness." (7/10)

Hildur Gudnadottir – Without Sinking
Boomkat say: “The sound Gudnadottir's cello makes paints these mysterious landscapes with an almost mystical purity, opening track "Elevation", for example, manages to outline an increasingly intense, almost mournful picture with seemingly simple layering techniques and barely perceptible processes submerged by the pregnant sound of Gudnadottir's hugely evocative instrument. (…) The album closes with the dense "Unveiled", an ominous drone undulation steered by those cautious, towering strings and barely perceptible found sounds. It's the space between the notes, the restraint and expectation, that packs the biggest emotional punch on this incredibly moving recording, never allowing those 'cinematic' qualities to get in the way of the genuine dread and catharsis resting at the core of this utterly magnificent album. Amazing music.”
Sehr dronig, sehr soundtrackig, sehr viel Cello Sounds. Mir dann doch etwas zuviel. (6/10)

The Horrors – Primary Colours
The Horrors erinnern mich an was was ich nicht genau beschreiben kann. Sie klingen oft sehr nach alten The Cure, besonders der Basslauf und der jammernde Gesang, dann nach The National. Sie sind aber punkiger und krachiger als The Cure, aber waviger und achtziger als The National. „Scarlet Fields“ ist sooo geil! „Sea Within A Sea“ ist sooo geil! (7.5/10)

Maximilian Hecker – One Day

Pj Harvey & John Parish – A Woman A Man Walked By

myspace.com/stimming

10-20 – 10-20
"10-20’s self titled album is a claustrophobic hulk of a release, constructed from parts of discarded machinery, short-circuiting currents of krautrock, broken hip hop structures, dense aquatic substreams and spectral elements, all of which are funnelled towards a single cohesive hypnotic pulse.
Based in devon, the coastal and elemental forces of the producer’s environment is evident in the scope of intricate sounds layered and woven into rough shorn textures, where only a filtered ghostly impression of club-land’s influence can be discerned within the resultant sound."
Ambient Hip-Hop ohne Vocals? Ambient Dub? Auf jeden Fall eine empfehlenswerte Geschichte! (7/10)

• Tipp: John Wiese & C. Spencer Yeh - Cincinnati

The cooperative of composer/improvisers John Wiese (Sissy Spacek) and C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) presents new a collection of works titled "Cincinnati." So far Wiese & Yeh's previous full-length documents have been culled from live performance situations and one could site "Cincinnati" as the duo's first studio album.
Recorded face-to-face in late 2007 at Ashworth Tap Room in Cincinnati OH, "Cincinnati" reveals further unexpected developments and strategies of this ongoing partnership. Familiar machineries were primed, but an increasingly alien attitude was fed through and processed into churning and bewildering shapes. The results of these sessions were catalogued and surgically isolated into specimens by Yeh; a little editing employed to carve the forms somewhat presentable, but no "studio trickery" to mask the organic nature. Mastered by Saff Mastering to sharpen the bulbs and polish the blades, the whole of the fourteen tracks form a monumentally intimate body touched by indeterminate intuition, instant composition, and interior logic.
Wiese and Yeh first joined together on a stage in Columbus OH, and since then have participated in the No-FI/CMN "Free Noise" 2007 tour in the UK, as well as fireworks-laden travels through coastal, midwest, and southern USA. With many finished missives yet to be issued, and many ideas discussed but not yet realized, the combined restlessness and curiousity of the team insures that "Cincinnati" gestures not only towards the past and present, but the future as well. dronedisco.com
